Alternative power sources for most homeowners fall into one of three main categories. They are either sun, wind or water powered with the sun and wind being the most 
popular and widespread of the three alternative power sources available. Each of these natural resources can provide power to use for many things in your home if you install a system that can capture and convert them.
Wind power is one of the oldest alternative power sources used and has been around for centuries in various forms. Early versions of windmills were used initially to grind grain and to pump water. These early designs provided a means for the local community to harness the amazing power of a passing breeze and convert it into useful work.
In many parts of the world windmills modeled on these early versions are still in use and going strong. Modern applications of wind energy are usually centered on wind turbines that are used to produce electricity. Initially these were very large, commercial solutions that were installed in coastal areas to catch a breeze off the water, to turn a series of blades and generate electricity. Even though they generally produce less current than a solar panel system, they have the advantage of being able to work day and night which makes them one of the most attractive alternative power sources.
The other popular alternative as a power source is solar. There are several uses for solar power and most homeowners that use the sun as an energy source use it for heating their water or generating electricity. Using the sun to heat the water in your home is a very effective solution that is inexpensive and can have a big impact on your energy bills. These solar water-heating solutions circulate the water in your home through a series of solar membranes located on your roof. These membranes are a series of small pipes that heat up when exposed to the sun and will transfer that heat to the water passing through them as well. This heated water is channeled back to your home and the process is repeated. This is a great solution for most homes and will supply all of the hot water you need on a sunny day.
Another great use for solar power is a solar panel system for generating your homes electricity. These systems have matured in recent years to become much smaller and more efficient and today provide a solution that can supply all of the power your home needs for free. These alternative power sources are usually designed to generate more energy during the day than you are using and the excess is sent back up the wire to your local utility and you are given a credit for this energy. During the evenings when the sun has set, you buy back some power for the local utility for your home. If the system was designed correctly, the amount of power you use and the amount of power you generate should equal out and you are left with no electricity bill. Both of these solar solutions can be used in the same home and provide great alternative power sources to buying more energy.
