Domestic Solar Power
The idea of using domestic solar power to generate a homes electricity has been appealing to many people for years. The challenges with domestic solar power systems up
until recently was that the systems available were expensive and required massive amounts of panels to generate a reasonable amount of power.
These problems have been solved with improvements to the technology and newer systems are less expensive and much more efficient as a result.
Modern domestic solar power systems have been improved in a number of ways and today provide the homeowner with a viable alternative to buying power from their local power utility. Some of the improvements were made to the design and others to the systems that connect them to your home. One of the major improvements to the newer solar panels is their greater efficiency. Panels produced today have efficiencies approaching 20%. This means that 20% of the potential energy hitting the panels is being converted to current.

While this seems like a small conversion rate, it is close to double the output compared to panels available only a few years ago. This is good news for the homeowner since it means they will need less of these more efficient panels to produce the same amount of current as the older panels. This translates to savings on the cost of installation on one of these domestic solar power systems, as well as minimizes the roof space required to install a system.
These newer solar panels are also more tolerant of their mounting position as well and allow for a greater flexibility for many installations. In the past, solar panels needed to have direct sun exposure for most of the day to be effective. This meant that if your roof was not the perfect orientation, the sunlight would strike the panels at a severe angle and the resulting current would be reduced accordingly. These newer panels can produce the majority of their current over a wide variety of angles and allows homeowners that could not install domestic solar power systems in the past to use these new solar panels. It also enables homeowners that had a marginal orientation with their home to generate larger amounts of current with these new solar panels.
The actual solar cells used in the construction of the solar panels have been improved as well and are more durable today. In the older solar panels even though the panels themselves could last 10 or 15 years, the solar cells started to lose their ability to convert sunlight to current long before that. This meant as the solar cells became less productive, the current from the solar panels decreased year after year and would eventually lead to the homeowner replacing the solar panels earlier than expected. These newer solar cells are formulated to retain their solar conversion abilities as they age and will allow a homeowner to use them longer and still have them generate the majority of their current for their domestic solar power system.
The control and connection technology for domestic solar power systems has improved as well and the current units are easier to connect to your home. The systems also offer a more flexible expansion of the number of solar panels they can handle and some have provisions for integrating other alternative energy solutions like a wind turbine. This enables the homeowner to have a single control and connection system for all of their alternative energy needs.
