How does wind power work? People have asked that question for centuries and the curiosity about how the wind 
could be used for generating free power has driven innovation ever since. Today wind power is still being used all over the world to generate power for critical activities and it proves to be an effective and consistent renewable resource that still has more to offer us as technology improves even further.
The very earliest use of wind power was on ships and enabled captains to navigate great distances with just the power of a passing breeze. This one innovation allowed great trading routes to be developed between countries using the sea to transport their goods. Even though ships could travel at distance before sails, the wind helped speed this transit time immensely. This meant that merchants could sell their goods in faraway places and have them arrive there quickly. Which increased their time to market and help them expand.
The principles used for sailing eventually migrated to land use as well and started off as crude windmills, because people once again asked, “how does wind power work” for other things besides sailing. Using the wind to generate power for doing things like pumping water and grinding grain is something that has been used for centuries all around the globe and was initially based on nautical sail principles. Even though these early efforts were productive, they were always being refined and improved on over time. Most of these early designs were based on a vertical windmill design that used a series of sails to catch the wind and rotate a platform connected to a central shaft. This rotation was then used to drive a pump for retrieving water from a well, or it was used in a mill to grind or process grain.

This development lead to an entire airline industry and is used today for travel, trade, and military defense all over the world.

The wind has been used for decades to generate electrical power for both consumer and commercial use. This power generation is based on wind turbine technology that uses a set of fixed blades to rotate when they catch a passing breeze. This rotation then turns a generator and provides current as long as the wind is blowing. These wind turbines are designed in a wide variety of sizes and styles and are being used in large wind farm production facilities as well as home installations to provide a source of clean and free power.
Even though the application of wind power may have changed over the years, it has had a marked and permanent impact on society. All of the innovation that has enabled us to take advantage of wind power has also helped to improve our lives. Today, harnessing the power of the wind helps us live better, travel faster and live cleaner by generating power from sources that don’t hurt our planet.
