The most common and familiar wind turbine technology is based on the horizontal axis turbine. This type of turbine uses a set of fixed blades mounted to an assembly that will rotate when a passing wind is caught by the blades. This rotation is used to drive a generator, which produces a current that can be used to power your home. This style of wind turbine is a very efficient design and will produce a good amount of current in a steady wind. The challenge with a horizontal design is that for it to spin, it needs to be facing into the wind. To accomplish this it has a tail rudder that will orient it correctly into the wind so the blades can turn and it can generate electricity. This can be a challenge if the wind is shifting constantly since the design can only spin when it has settled into position. If the wind changes direction often, the wind turbine can spend most of its time adjusting to the wind and less time generating power. It makes up for this by generating a lot of power when it is spinning and this makes it the more productive of the two designs.
The vertical axis wind turbine is normally based on a single center shaft that has a series of cups or scoops mounted on it that it uses to catch the wind. When it spins it rotates this central shaft, which is connected to a generator and will produce electricity when turned. This design has the advantage of always being able to spin regardless of the winds direction. This means that even though it is less efficient than the horizontal designs, it is spinning more often and makes up for the lower efficiency over time.
The other advantage a vertical design has, is that it can spin in a smaller breeze than a typical horizontal wind turbine can. This also adds to its output current and helps close the efficiency gap even further. Also, since the vertical axis wind turbine is spinning a vertical shaft, the generator can be located at ground level. This makes servicing the system easier and eliminates much of the weight from the turbine. Most of the vertical designs can be mounted without the need for a tower and can save you money on the installation.
